Reliance to build World’s largest AI Data Center in India

Reliance Industries, led by Chairman Mukesh Ambani, has unveiled plans to build the world’s largest AI-powered data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This massive project, with a capacity of 3 gigawatts, is expected to cost between $20 billion and $30 billion and aims to position India as a global leader in AI infrastructure.
The announcement comes amidst growing global competition in AI development. Earlier this week Donald Trump revealed a $500 billion investment plan, known as “Stargate,” to build AI infrastructure in the United States. This project is backed by major players like SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI.
Reliance has already taken significant steps toward AI leadership. Last year, the company partnered with Nvidia to develop AI supercomputers in India and create large language models (LLMs) tailored to India’s diverse languages. According to Bloomberg, Reliance plans to source AI semiconductors for this facility from Nvidia. Speaking at the Nvidia AI Summit in 2024, Jensen Huang emphasized India’s potential in AI, saying, “It makes complete sense that India should manufacture its own AI. You should not export data to import intelligence.”
The Jamnagar data center will surpass Meta’s Louisiana facility (2 gigawatts) and other global giants like Switch’s Citadel Campus and China Telecom’s Inner Mongolia Information Park, making it the world’s largest in terms of power capacity.
Additionally, the Indian government is fully backing the nation’s AI ambitions. It has pledged over ₹10,000 crore to support AI entrepreneurs, initiatives, and the development of LLMs, further solidifying India’s position in the AI race.
