DeepSeek: A Tremor in AI Industry!

Once Again Everyone is Freaking out about Artificial Intelligence and this time it’s not Only Common People but Tech Giants Like OpenAI, Meta, Google and Nvidia. And this time when the entire world freaked out about DeepSeek it took more than half a trillion dollars (Yeah! That’s a lot) off Nvidia’s market cap.

What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek Led by CEO Liang Wenfeng is a little-known Chinese startup based in Hangzhou that emerged from a university startup a couple of years ago. It recently released an AI Model R1 that experts say holds its own against industry leaders like OpenAI and Google despite being made with less money and computing power. Within a few days of launch, it was the most popular free app downloaded on Apple’s app store in the UK and other parts of the world.

How It’s different from other Models?

But there are a lot of AI Models in the Market and Why DeepSeek is taking all the hype? This is because this model uses a different kind of internal architecture that requires less memory use, hence reducing the computational costs of every search or interaction with the chatbot-style system. Also praised by researchers for its ability to tackle complex reasoning tasks, particularly in mathematics and coding and it appears to be producing results comparable with rivals for a fraction of the computing power. DeepSeek has said it took two months and less than $6m (£4.8m) to develop the model, although some observers caution this is likely to be an underestimate. Nevertheless, it is vastly less than the billions that the Silicon Valley tech companies are spending to develop AIs and is less expensive to operate.

Shock to Nvidia!

Nvidia is one of the companies that has gained the most from the AI boom. However, its stock experienced a significant decline following the launch of DeepSeek’s R1 Model. DeepSeek’s R1 model operates independently of NVIDIA’s CUDA software, which has been a cornerstone in AI development. This independence raises concerns about NVIDIA’s continued dominance in the AI hardware market.

Where does it fail?

This AI Model is good in various aspects but it fails to answer questions about certain political events. When asked the following questions, the AI assistant responded: “Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.”

  • Why is Xi Jinping compared to Winnie-the-Pooh?
  • What was the Umbrella Revolution?
  • What happened on June 4, 1989, at Tiananmen Square?y6u
  • What happened to Hu Jintao in 2022?

Users experimenting with DeepSeek have seen the Chinese AI chatbot reply and then censor itself in real-time, providing an arresting insight into its control of information and opinion. Also, Experts have urged caution over rapidly embracing the Chinese artificial intelligence platform DeepSeek, citing concerns about it spreading misinformation and how the Chinese state might exploit users’ data.
